My formmer colleage in IBM is a Indian descent with a last name of Khan. I was always intrigued by his last name and wondered if his geneaology has anything to do with Mongol people.
I think I found the connection that Tamurlane is the son-in-law of 察合台 (Chagatai Khan) and is great-great-grandfather of Babur, the founder of the Mughal Dynasty.
Well, Tamurlane is mentioned in Simon Sebag Montefiore's Jesusalem which I am currently reading.
You are absolutely right! Janet had asked our Indian guide about the name Khan in India. He confirmed that these should be Mughal descendants. In fact, the word Mughal is a corrupted form of Mongol.
