說到吃東西,人是種習慣性的動物,小時候吃什麼,長大以後就很難改變。前幾天看到記者訪問電視"Bizarre Food" 節目的主持人Andrew Zimmern,記者問他:『你吃遍了世界上千奇百怪的食物,那你回到家裡吃什麼呢?』

他說︰我是典型猶太人,回家來最愛吃的就是“Matzah balls”(猶太雞湯丸子)。這個回答,就有點像中國人說:山珍海味,還不如老家的魚丸湯順口 ! 猶太餐館,在美南並不多見。來到德州休士頓,有機會去當地頗負盛名的Kenny & Ziggy 猶太餐廳用餐,於是我們就專程去吃了正宗的Matzah balls。

Matzah balls是用猶太人的不發酵餅乾(matzo) 撖成細粉後再加上雞油、雞蛋,揉成雞蛋大的丸子,放入雞肉高湯裡煮熟而成。吃的時候把丸子撈出,加上少許雞肉與細麵,湯湯水水的,鮮美無比。其中奧妙就在那丸子,鬆而不散,油而不膩,熱氣騰騰,雞香四溢,的確不同凡響! 這是我第一次吃Matzah balls,可是馬上就了解這不是我最後一次。我明白為什麼這麼普通的小吃,就是猶太人的comfort food之一。美味之外,還帶著『家鄉味』、『媽媽的菜』的溫馨。吃一碗Matzah balls,使我了解了猶太人的另一個層面。

not sure if this is Americanized Israeli food? We could have tried it when we were in Israel if we had known.

I am sure this is one of the real Jewish "Comfort Foods" similar to won-ton soup of China or fish ball soup of Taiwan. It is like Mom's cooking and therefore not commonly served in restaurants. If you have chance to go to Houston do pay K&Z deli a visit. "It is the place where big shots start their day" claimed by their web intro is probably not exaggerating. When we were there having breakfast I overheard multi-million dollar deals being discussed behind me.
