我一向不怎麼喜歡吃蘋果，但是自從新品種如「喜慶」和「富士」蘋果問世以後，我對蘋果有了新的評價。史密斯婆婆的蘋果是老品種，特別酸，我一想到就牙齒軟。我一般是不會買它的。可是它有幾個優點––抗病性強，蘋果的保鮮時期可長達幾個月，用它來做蘋果派最理想。因為德州的陽光強，日照時間久，據說德州種的史密斯婆婆蘋果的糖份比一般要高百分之四十。我希望是如此。
這是我手植的三株花梨樹 (Bradford Pear) 十五年來已成大樹，高過兩層樓。它們春天開一樹的白花，煞是好看，可惜不結果。今年冬天我打算嫁接果梨到它的枝幹上，用抗病性強的品種如 Kieffer 或 Warren 來實驗，這就是我今年的園藝計劃。

Dear Wei:
I am looking forward to the success of these two apple trees. I have done some research. Gala and Granny Smith should do OK in Texas. It may take several years to produce. Please stay tuned. My parent's old home in Colorado had two kind of apple trees-- the Red Delicious and the Golden Delicious. They were just wonderful, producing loads of fruit every year. I felt sad that I had to sell the house when they passed away.
